Water tank fill controller

Water tank fill controller

 Problem statement

During topping water tank from pressurized water source you have to keep eye on water level to avoid overfilling. on my boat it will push water to vent and leak into the bilge and due to vent line has no sufficient diameter to eliminate tank from pressurizing I have to keep manual fill lid open and watch water level.  It requires attention and coordination to cut shore water when tank is filled full.

 Description

Controller is intended to cut pressurized shore water source at the moment when tank is full and make annoying sound to remind to disconnect hose or just cut water on shore side.

System design description

Shore water source connected deck mounted fresh water inlet. Then water stream to water tank through in-line valve with 12V solenoid control.

When 12V provided to controller controller checks water level and if sensor do not indicates the tank is full it send signal to solenoid to open valve. Then waits until sensor detects the tank is full. Also controller cuts the water in 15 minutes regardless of sensor signal.

Sensor used in the system

It is inductive  water level sensor 5-12V with NPN output.

 Normal operation

  1. User connects water source
  2. User power controller up
  3. User waits until controller starts alarming the tank is full
  4.  User disconnects water source and power controller off

Controller indicates current state by buzzer signals.

  • Power up                                  - Single short beep on power up
  • Filling (Valve open)                 - Short beeps every 10 seconds
  • Tank is full (Valve closed)       - Long beeps every 1 second
  • Timeout  (Valve closed )          - Short beeps every 1 second
Controller shuts water line as soon as full and plays role of reminder device to disconnect shore water source.
