Beginning...

Welcome to my new old boat.

Irwin Citation 34 '78

November 2021

BIG Project.

Looks not a full trash, but a lot of TLC required.

People live on the boat and cockpit was theirs backyard ;)

Little ugly A/C, obstructing all view from cockpit, navigating boat like WWII  aircraft - look on sides only.

First view inside

 Galley.

looks more or less good, however, everything over cloth and unter things on the countertop rotted to nothing.

Lockers behind the microwave. Glass to collect water :-)

After a removed wall behind the microwave...

This is view

to over ice chest to aft, bulkhead between cockpit lockers and cabin rotted out, hole to ice chest through countertop. Surprise, no thermal insulation in ice chest from top side.

Two things contributed in water leakage - Stanchion base  (all off them was made poorly and leak) and deck drains (will show below)

Front Cabin

 Not too bad?

Floor is gone.

These side plywood panels rotted and planks barely hold on place by finish nails in paint.

Headliner smells like grandma basement (mold) and tiered in several places.

Front lower shroud chain plate mount base repaired. and looks like need some reinforcement.  chainplate made from several pieces bolted together.

close look on repair, not sure how much glass was used...

Head....Toilet...

Toilet does not work, when i started check it it puff-ed to me about half liter old pee-pop crap back to my face.

All behind and around rotted from leaking stanchions.

Couple pictures during "opening"

Main Cabin

looks tired. signs water stayed some time in cabin flood, meas all floor panels need to be replaced, headliner is old, smelly and need to be removed and redone.

All side panels rotted in different stages of decomposition.

Starboard bulkhead replaced. but looks like chaiplatas are leaking and it is compromised again. (then i found it is decorative plywood, teak ply sits on particle board and covers 1/2" unknown quality plywood).

Fuel tank under starboard settee looks like caulking over masking tape.  Really strange technique.
Nice vie to see bottom edge of the side panel.

Navigation  table.  good in general, but as you see these wallpapers on back, there all rotted and just covered with it.  and again.... side panel need to be thrown out. also clear signs of water next to refrigerator.

Just one more view

Port side bulkhead delaminated

Stress crack. Compression post support under the in-liner is not sufficient. or too much load was applied.
Question to design. Is it intentional pocket for water to get bulkhead and compression post rot faster?
Not sure what is white powder there. (looks like borax)

Electrical system

low voltage panel

and inside

110V panel (hidden over the corner)

Inside

Oxidated everything and everywhere

Nobody knows about terminals with heatshrink covers

BTW original alternator appeared burned out completely.

Nice example how ORIGINAL wiring was done

Another good sample :)

Engine wiring connector after some cleaning....

Antenna looks like need some love. ( help it to be retired)

Deck lights connection.

Steam light

Manual bilge pump.

Need complete rebuild.

Standing rigging

Deck drains.

Tube ORIGINALLY was inserted on some sealant without glassing. Result - all 4 drains leak to cabin more than drain water out.

 Starboard chainplates through deck

Openned later... Starboard chainplates openning. It was not sealed properly, as result whole deck panel 2'x6' saturated with water .

Stanchions

Stanchion mounts need to be rebuilt. They originally was not built as Irwin documentation says.
Wood blocks was too small and builder did not find anything better but make decarative cover to hide bad work.

Just one layer of glass  whuffed with dry fiberglass cloth.

Port side front low shroud  mount (knee)

Port side front low shroud  mount (knee). plywood knee rotted out and only 2 bolts hold chainplate  and waiting for nice time to failure.

better view

Engine control mount.

Headliner

Nice headliner pictures showing back side of it. All covered with different breads of mold.
That why I am very surprised when people asking how to clean this type of headliner. (car style vinyl with small holes)

Floor panels

Sump box.

Good surprise, after sump box pump failure previos owner did not find anything better than drill hole in it to drain galley sink water to bilge. As result everything in bilge was covered with 1/2" layer of black smelling goo. (picture is after cleanup)

Exterior

Looks like boat was docked some time without any fenders, scratches on both sides, mostly gelcoat depth.

Comments

  1. Hello! I also have an Irwin 34 Citation, 1978. I commend you on the beautiful work you are doing and documenting it as well. Fortunately my boat was cared for by the same couple for 30+ years. I am the third owner. It is very pleasant to sail and with a newer Yanmar engine.

I saw your photo of your fuel tank. My tank was sealed in a similar way with screws and epoxy over the screws, plus boat caulk around the gauge and fittings underneath. Nothing leaks but I have no way of accessing the tank to inspect or clean.

I am wondering if you have done anything with your tank yet? You may email me at appleot @ gmail . com or I will check back. Best of luck!

    1. No, I did not do anything to it yet, but i will redo it due to diesel fuel is finding way UNDER starboard sit. Not a lot, just sweating and smelling :-) . Question about what to do. My idea to make 3mm HDPE inliner inside the tank, using original tank as template make vacuum forming inside the tank. And than weld 1/2” HDPE sheet on the top.
I will lost some capacity (maybe 3-4 liters) , but will have totally solid tank. Planning to do this this winter. I will document process.
