Half year report. My Citation 34 problems list review

Half year report

211 work hour total

Original problems identified when I did inspection before purchase. It was really project boat from the beginning .

Color code ( Problem addressed, On progress, Nothing done yet]

  1. OLD BOAT, Interior after 2 years live a board [Cleaned boat inside to remove previous owners crap, problem closed]
  2. A lot of water damage coming from weather water. [all rotted wood is removed from interior, plan to rebuild interior almost from scratch]
  3. Port side lower front chain-plate anchor rotted  [chainplate knee rebuilt, DONE]
  4. Hull gel-coat scratched in widest parts over dock [Starboard side and bow patched and primed, port-side is in plans]
  5. port side hull paint flaking in one place [not done yet]
  6. Stanchions leaking like hell [all stanchion  mounting blocks removed and rebuilt, stanchions installation in plans]
  7. Ports old and leaking [new windows bought and ready for installation, pilot work on one window is started, and window installed]
  8. left stationary port glass cracked [big stationary ports replaced, DONE]
  9. Deck is 40 years old paint, but maintainable. [patching small gelcoat voids planned this year, full repaint later,  old cabin handles removed and holes patched, old drip board removed and holes patched]
  10. Furler requires maintenance and diagnostic. [Furler is good, however front stay top sta-lok requires to be redone and 4" spacer plate added from bottom to address front stay shortening]
  11. Main sail really dirty, a lot of green. [sails removed, and washed. Main sail has a lot of small tear holes, Genoa need some maintenance but good in general, second Genoa found in locker, looks like it is good for repair]
  12. Underwater: FG cracks around bottom rudder bracket and cutlass bearing stand where metal joined to FG. [ will be addressed when get on dry]
  13. Cockpit, engine hatch is soft, no sealing [Hatch is re-cored and re-glassed. sealing will be done later]
  14. Ugly RV style AC. [ AC appeared work good, but still ugly. 12000 BTU marine AC sourced, mounting shelf made. Installation planned. 16 hours to do]
  15. Broken pulpit tubing, no place to put anchor, however 3 anchors in inventory.?[ nothing done so far,  at some moment will make new pulpit]
  16. Sterling: Port side roller mounted on two mount points, need to be fixed [everything tighten now, so far good for lake sailing; for future port side block mount plate has to be redone]
  17. Motor control - need to me fixed, piggy-wiggly mounted all screws not tighten, as well some plywood used for mount.[ new aluminum mount plate made, control mounted, transmission control cable replaced]
  18. All shrouds tighten to the END, standing rigging under question. [Wrong size chain plates, mast was tilted 3-4” port side. New chain plates made mast straightened side to side. ]
  19. Lifelines are really old. [lifelines removed, will take care later]
  20. Fuel tank is built in starboard sit, it is sealed over the top. Looks really strange, owner is swearing he cleaned it and sealed with very good adhesive... will see... Level meter glass is cracked, likely need replacement.  [gas gauge replaced 1/4 tank shown, planning to add electrical gauge later. Still want to inspect tank, tried to inspect with borescope over fuel port, likely best way - remove fuel gauge and see inside]
  21. Port side navigation light glass is broken. [front nav lights are sourced and ready for install]
  22. One of two spreader lights does not work. [now no one works, new led lights waiting installation]
  23. Known history of dismasting. Mast replaced from I30. [nothing to do with it]
  24. Starboard bulkhead replaced, but not glassed to hull. [ deeper inspection showed the new bulkhead already wet. Bulkhead replaced and tabbed to hull]
  25. Port side bulkhead de-laminated from tabbing. [bulkhead tabbed from one side, still planning to tab it from toilet side during sewage rebuildung, also connection between pieces of bulkhead have to be redone to use machine screws instead of wood screws or pieces need to be epoxied together]
  26. Starboard front low shroud anchor rebuilt, but need to confirm if repair is good. [ several layers of 1708 and 24oz rowing added to sleep better. Done.]
  27. Centerboard has lateral crack - need to be prepared to repair it. [nothing to do before hulling boat out of water. Not critical due to centerboard ballast made from lead pallets seeped in epoxy.]
  28. A lot of trash in compartments, maybe will find something useful [Cleaned. Done]
  29. Companion way door need to be rebuilt [slides and doors rebuilt. Top part repaired, two other boards rebuilt from teak and 1/4 plexiglass added in doors. Looks cool!]
  30. Strange drain hole in anchor well coming inside [figured out that about inch pipe was routed to the same drain as cockpit drainage. No real sense in it at all a specially because it was originally made from PVC pipe which almost destroyed already. As soon as I am looking for installing windlass and completely close original chain-locker and build deeper one below.]
  31. Cabin sole is water damaged, require redo. [no activity yet]

Problems I found later.

[engine] alternator appeared completely burned out. [replaced it with one 60A  I had in my garage. ]

[hull] starboard side toe rail and hull/deck connection leaked as hell. [Appeared somebody just made groove 1/4x1/4 there in between hull and deck and filled it with kind of cheap bonds filled. [opened hull/deck connection filled it with thickened epoxy with adhesive filler 404 and microfibers for 2 inch in deep., glassed over and reinstalled aluminum rail back, starboards side absolutely cool.]

[hull] deck drains. All 4 tubes leaked, they appeared just inserted with 5200 or something like this. [Glassed them to hull side and deck using flex epoxy.]

[mast] forestay is damaged on the top, looks like jib halyard wrapping damage, 3’” in top part was untwisted as well sta-lok connector thread was undone. I was able to unscrew it with hands, also one wire was broken already [as soon as I am planning to redo all standing rigging pretty soon and no other problems with stays I decided to cut damaged part of a stay and add connection plates between front chain plate and turnbuckle, fuller construction give me this space. Work in progress, all parts ordered and on the way.]

[mast] VHF antenna and cable need to be replaced [parts ordered will be redone with forestry]

[mast] front chainplate had welded pin for pulpit ind was ripped out. Looking to replace chainplate. [chainplate ordered]

[mast] starboard spreader chain plate has cracks. [parts ordered, will need to weld them together and install. Will be challenge to replace without stepping mast down]

[water] sump box, pump was broken, hose completely clogged. [All replaced.]

[water] looks like  small fresh water tank in leaking to bilge, [need to confirm.]

[hull] starboard side deck do panel appeared completely wet and rotted around chain plates. [Wet section of the core replaced with new marine grade plywood.]

[water] holding tank is about 1/4 full. As well straps keeping it mounted are rotted out. [will be removed, cleaned and set back]

[mast] mast step sagged about 1/4”,[ need more investigation. But looks like it  has happened many years ago. Investigation with borehole showed strange ‘pice of poop’ under mast step. Will look dipper later, when holding tank will be removed]

[motor] motor mounts screwed with lag bolts. Wood frame under is ok, but fiberglass delaminated from it. [reglassing and changing way how mounts bolted planned for later time]

[toilet] original head is broken. Hoses are “sweating’. [planning to replace toilet and all hoses around it]

[mast] mast top lights are not working. [need to be done, planned at the same time as forestry reinstallation.]

[mast] good surprise - spinnaker block pin present on mast top. However no cleat on the mast for spinnaker halyard. [ I have block, shackle and spare halyard to install, will do when go to mast next time]

[engine] Engine alarm signals did not worked, engine electrical  connector was heavy oxidized. [ Cleaned and lubricated. All alarm signals working well now]

[engine] engine air filter. Element was not installed at all. [filter installed]

[engine] raw water pump, seals leaked. [Raw water pump rebuilt.]

[engine] engine service [oil changed in the engine and transmission]

[hull] wood exposed (fiberglass cracks) around driveshaft pipe insert in the hull. [ No water ingress, wood is in good state, original skin was about 1/8 or even maybe 1/16 thick. Looks like will be a Pugh just glass it around with several layers of FG., work to be done]

[hull] centerboard lift line pipe has to be straightened and reclamped. [planned at time when boat will be on dry]

[hull] transom paint is flaking, not clear why it was repainted. [In some time need to sand it and repaint.]

[navigation] Compass was broken [Compass rebuilt, compass mount repainted and repaired, all installed on place]
